Home at last.
01/01/2008

Saba and I managed to make terrific time on the road home.

It was a long day of driving. I was just getting coffee at Dunkin Donuts when my cell rang at 5:15 my time, 6:15 FL time. It was one of the bosses from work asking if I could come into the office. I laughed and told him they would have the case solved by the time I got there; he suddenly realized I was away. It made me chuckle a little and Saba and I headed out on the Highway.

It was an uneventful trip until we got to I 10 in the panhandle. All of a sudden traffic came to a halt. The emergency sirens sounded shortly after and then I just shut the car off. We were not going to be moving any time soon. There was a truck across both lanes of the highway, it was pouring out and the scene didn’t look good. It eventually stopped raining and Saba and I took a break along side of the road. It took about 50 minuets to clear the wreck. I don’t think the people in the car faired well, the ambulance took it’s time and it was completely crumpled when we drove by.

We continued on with out any other mishaps. The first motel we stopped at had a no pets sign, then the second one also had no pets posted. I grabbed my trusty Motel 6 guide and found one down the road a way. We landed in Baton Rouge LA for the night. There was no highspeed internet I could use and I din't have a dial up number for LA. It wasn’t in the nicest neighborhood: there was a security gate and barbed wire along the fence. I was too exhausted to continue driving and figured with the dog, I shouldn’t have a problem. It was OK, the other guests were a bit noisy for my liking but we got some good sleep.

We headed out the next morning a bit late for us: 7:15 in the morning. I managed to drive the whole way back to Austin with out having a single problem. I did stop at the TX welcome site and picked up a new guide and a new map of TX. I want to use it a bit more this year as with other years, but with the house done, I think I will have a bit more time to travel on the weekends.

Saba and I pulled into the driveway about 3:30 and that felt great. I called the folks, called a couple of friends and then took Saba to the park. I owed him for the grueling couple of days in the car, he was such a trooper. I walked him around the park a few times, he played with the other dogs and burned up a lot of energy. I could feel my body working out the kinks from the road trip as I chased after him.

My New Year’s Eve consisted of a frozen pizza, a hot bubble bath and a long sleep in my own bed. Yah, that was a great way to end the old year, taking care of me. That's something I plan on doing a lot of in '08.
