Internal Affairs and District Reps last night.

We had presentations by the IA folks that was really interesting. The majority of complaints are for rude behavior, I mean this is a great city if most folks are mad at the police because he/she said something they didn‘t like. A lot different than the east coast cities where I grew up. You were lucky if they didn’t take you to a back ally if you pissed them off. They have different classifications of offences, Class A would be excessive use of force, class B would be improper behavior, speeding/driving issues/rude behavior. Seemed a little silly to me, I don’t think I would bother with a complaint if the officer “threw” my drivers license back at me, but hey, you are dealing with the public.
There was a long discussion about the professional protesters I mentioned a week or two ago. Some of the class saw the news coverage of the certification hearings and mentioned that it always seems to be the same faces on the news. I kept my mouth shut during this discussion, I have thoughts on this but I wanted to hear what other folks thought and there views. At the break I did manage to speak to two other classmates about recent events. It was amazing to me to hear there interpretation of the high profile incidents. Jessie Jackson was in town last week demanding that central Texas needed an oversight board to look into the “excessive” number of minorities shot in the last 3 years. Sophia King had a knife over her apartment manager and the officer shot her to “stop the threat”. Another man was killed as he dragged an officer from a car as he tired to stop him for a stolen vehicle. If I was being dragged down the street, I would shoot if he wouldn’t stop. I can’t recall off the top of my head what the other incident was.
The district representatives presentation was full of stories and photos of there job. I do know all about this program, so I was a tad board. The presenter was fine, but a he covered the “same old stuff” for me. I guess some of my classmates aren’t as aware of the program as I am. I deal with these folks on a regular basis.
Plans for today: work, answer hate mail and take Saba to the park for a run.
