Safer barriers, X body cars and roof hatches are on the way according to Mike Helton. Robby Gordon defending his caution pass again.
07/05/2003

It was a rainy 4th of July here, showers on and off all day long. I spent most of the day watching racing, it’s my favorite way to spend a day off lately. Daytona practice, Trackside Live and the Bush race. It was followed up by Tom Hanks in Days of Thunder.

Mike Helton made an appearance on Trackside Live and made some major announcements. The Safer barriers are coming and will be installed in some of the tracks this year. Testing is near completion on the roof hatches, just rollovers to go. He also mentioned the new X body cars. They are working on a way to build the cars from the ground up that will make room for all the new safety equipment and give the drivers a little more room. Interesting developments from the R&D facilities.

Poor Robby Gordon, he got grilled again on the passing during a caution. This goes back to the last race in California. It’s on record he asked 3 times during the drivers meeting if it was legal. I think Robbie was correct, I think Jeff Gordon is just being a whiner. Jeff wasn’t effected by the pass and he keeps bringing it up. Get over it. Robby said the check had cleared and the trophy was on the shelf and the incident was over for him. There was much discussion about how the gentleman’s agreement came into effect. It goes back to pre spotter days, when there were only a few drivers that could win the race. It was agreed by the top racers that they would not race back to the yellow. It has never been a NASCAR rule, just an agreement. Mike Helton said unless it becomes a safety issue NASCAR will be staying out of the gentleman’s agreement.

Saba and hunkered down to watch Dale Jr. dominate the Bush race. He led all 150 laps. Michael Waltrip couldn’t get his car past Dale Jr. Finishing order: Dale Jr., Michael Waltrip, Jamie McMurray, Ron Hornaday, Johnny Sauter, Scott Riggs in the Nestquik bunny car, Brian Vickers then Todd Bodine. Not a very exciting race, Dale Jr. just stayed out front the whole race. Restrictor plate racing at Daytona.
