A bus strike, jury duty and a shooting.
11/08/2008
It was a heck of a short week.
Wednesday morning as I was heading to Jury Duty, I saw on the news the local bus company was on strike. That meant I had to hop on my bicycle to get to the court and work. It happened I was assigned to a court adjacent to where I work. I managed to get down the hill, onto the hike and bike trails with little problem. I did have to detour a couple of times since there is construction affecting the trail. I managed to figure out a better route after the morning commute. I was only in Jury Duty for a half hour: all the cases for the day had been settled, dismissed or no show’s that will have warrants issued.
I headed back over to the office and got going on my work for the day. One of the interns brought up a parking issue and I redirected him to someone else. I was a bit pissed off about it since I was on my bike. I made sure I got out on time since I was heading home on my bicycle and with the time change it was getting near to dusk. I managed to make the hill on the way home: I was a bit surprised since I had struggled with it the last few times I have ridden downtown. I must be getting stronger from the yoga practice. I landed home just as it was getting dark. I made dinner for myself and one of the neighborhood ladies; she just had a baby girl. We do the food lists for each other: babies, surgeries and other occasions.
I head to bed and when I woke up on Thursday morning I saw on the news there was a manhunt going on. An officer had been fired at, one of the bad guys was dead and the others were on the loose. It had been going on for a few hours, so I called the sergeant to see if I should go in early. I headed in to work, but drove to save time. It sure was a long day. There were new procedures to follow, new units assisting and some detectives I didn’t know all that well. I felt like I was directing traffic most of the day. Trying to keep everyone on the same page, get them the supplies needed and keep track of the investigation. I managed to get home by 7:00 and just crashed for the night.
Friday I had to ride to work again, the bus strike wasn’t settled. I headed down the hill, on the better route this time: it was nice to enjoy the foliage, the river and the people watching this time. It was still busy at the office, the investigation will continue for weeks. It was a day of sorting through paperwork, organizing and working on the case book and answering lots of phone calls. I headed home; it was dark by the time I arrived so there was no park adventure for Saba. We headed out and did a bit of shopping and then settled in for the night.
